Aly Abousabaa
Aly Abousabaa is Director General of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). He is a strategic leader in sustainable development, climate change advocacy, and agricultural research across the world’s dry regions. Since joining CGIAR to head ICARDA, Aly has led research and innovation across Central and West Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. He has steered programs on climate-smart crops, genetic resources conservation, resilient livestock and rangeland systems, and sustainable water and soil management in drylands. Under his leadership, ICARDA has advanced global strategies for dryland resilience and strengthened regional and international collaboration on food security and climate adaptation. He champions the global scaling of dryland agriculture innovations to build resilient livelihoods for smallholder farmers under a climate crisis.
Prior to joining CGIAR, Aly was Vice President of the African Development Bank (AfDB). He also serves on several international boards, including the Board of Governors of the Arab Water Council and the Board of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation.
